EVENT UPDATE:

2020 Cap 2k has been cancelled.

Dear Swim Friends,

It is with much regret that we report the 2020 Cap 2k cancelled along with the closure and strict shut-down measures of all parks, pools, venues & gatherings in the City of Austin. Even as we become more hopeful of the physical distancing mandate being lifted, it is obvious that it will not be in time for this year’s Cap 2k.

Please know that our family highly respects the “swim under any condition” attitude of most open water swimmers. In fact, we celebrate it every time we join you in the face of environmental challenges — and, that’s been quite a number of times over the last 2 decades of events.  Your enjoyment of the challenge has been a huge factor in our continuing to host our open water events!  Many thanks for this.

Many of you who have swum the Cap 2k, Lake Travis Relay, or Highland Lakes Challenge and have done so rain-or-shine, a few times in swift waters, sometimes enduring extremely cold waters or, on rare occasion, in edge-of-hurricane winds, know that our mode is to "find a way.”  We strive to provide challenging (and, thus fun) swimming opportunities for our race participants.  It saddens us greatly and is unfortunate, but this is one challenge we just cannot surmount by event day.

We remain optimistic that we all will have a window provided sometime this summer in which we can again happily immerse ourselves in the gentle (or not so gentle sometimes!) flow of the medium we so love — as well as to share the fellowship aquatic endeavors provide.

We very much appreciate the support you’ve shown and the words of encouragement as we’ve worked to figure this out. Wishing safety & health to you and your families in this unprecedented time.

Respectfully,
Sandy Neilson-Bell, Event Coordinator
Dr. Keith Bell, Event Director

If you have any doubts about your ability to complete the swim in under an hour, you should not participate. There will be a 1-hour hard deadline for the swim after which swimmers will be pulled in order to clear the course.

Water temperature: While 69-72 degrees has been a historical average in this lake, and is a nice temperature range for most open-water swimmers, depending on fluctuating weather patterns and the possible resulting release of water from the upper lakes, we have experienced temperatures as low as 63 degrees.  In contrast, there has also been a surprisingly hot year where the temperatures was between 78-80 degrees.

If you are not used to water on the cold range, it is highly recommended that you prepare for the temperature conditions ahead of time with regular swims in similar or colder water.

All fees are non-refundable.   Race funding expenses unfortunately cannot be unspent.  If you are unable to participate in the race for any reason or there are dangerous conditions which cause cancellation of the race, there are no refunds, transfers, or deferrals.  Participant fees are invested into the cost of staging the event which includes an inordinate amount of energy and pre-event expense such as:  planning & arranging course logistics, vendors, Lake Authority communications, permitting, insurance costs, marketing, equipment, crew & volunteer organization, boat expenses, re-stocking or other cancellation losses, shirts, awards, other goodies — not to mention organizers & sponsors time & stress making these arrangements &  jumping through various hoops re: same.

Your organizers do highly respect  the "swim under any condition" attitude of most open water swimmers and as many of you already know we do our best to provide the opportunity for our race participants to swim.  Should extreme weather be a factor, our first step is always to postpone the start time of the race that morning within the limit permitted by conditions and venue permissions.
